The Coconut Lagoon, set on the banks of the Lake Vembanad, is located in Kumarakom, about 85 kms from Cochin. Accessible, only by boat, the Coconut Lagoon is surrounded by the Lake Vembanad on one side, and backwaters on the other. Conde´ Nast Traveller once described Coconut Lagoon as one of the 25 best destinations in the world. An eco-friendly resort, it has won several awards, including national eco-friendly and heritage awards and state pollution control awards.
The accommodation consists of individual cottages and villas, set around Coconut tress in a tropical garden, built in the traditional Kerala style, relying heavily on wood, and some villas even have private pools. All rooms have air-conditioning and, with the exception of the pool villas, all have open-air bathrooms. There are no televisions in the rooms, in keeping with the resort, but there is one in the recreation centre.
The Resort has two restaurants, the main restaurant, which is verandah style restaurant, featuring sumptous buffet options that celebrate the best and most varied traditions of Kerala cuisine and then there is the Fort Cochin, a speciality seafood restaurant serving a variety of shellfish, sea and river fish in local and international styles, as well as meat and vegetarian dishes.
In addition to a fully equipped Ayurveda center, facilities at the Coconut Lagoon include a large outdoor swimming pool, a Yoga and Meditation center and a Rectrational area. The Resort can also arrange guided visits to the Kumarakom Bird Sanctuary, a heaven for bird lovers. The Resort is also happy to arrange sunset cruises on the lake Vembanad. In addition, there are regular cooking demonstrations, as well as Kathakali (traditional Kerala dances) and Kalari (traditional Kerala martial arts) shows in the evenings.
The Ayurvedic Centre has been awarded ‘green leaf' status by the government of Kerala. The fully equipped Ayurveda Center at the Coconut Lagoon is headed by a fully qualified and thoroughly experienced Doctor, who after detailed consultation, decides on diets and treatments for guests. There are 6 treatment rooms here, offering many treatments, for both health and beauty, including massages, and shirodhara (where oil is dripped onto the ‘'third eye'' or forehead).
