Kalari Kovilakom Palace is located in the old princely capital town of Kollengode in the foothills of the Annamalai range, 105 km, or about two-and-a-half hours drive away from Cochin.Kalari Kovilakom is the Palace for Ayurveda, built almost 200 years ago, perhaps the first and only one of its kind.A magnificent nineteenth century palace, Kalari offers you a holistic experience based on the five thousand year old tradition of Ayurveda. The kings and Queens of Kerala would lock themselves up once a year without any disturbances, in Palaces such as Kalari, for Ayurvedic treatment. Today, at Kalari you can experience the very same experience of these kings and queens. Keeping with the tradition of the palace, you are asked to wear non-leather footwear supplied by Kalari. They even provide white cotton Indian kurta pyjamas for you wear during your stay so that you don't spoil your own clothes with stains from the ayurvedic medicated oil used in the treatments.
This is an extremely eco-friendly hotel: plastic and chemicals aren't used, and everything that can be, is recycled.
Kalari Kovilakom has 18 Palatial Suites that offer the experience of authentic palace living. There are two sections to the accommodation, the Old Guest Wing with 20's colonial Western-styled rooms with four-poster beds and traditional polished decorative tiled floors. Then there is the Palace Wing which has traditional Kerala architecture reminiscent of the "zenana" (traditional Indian women's private quarters). All rooms are Airconditioned and have modern western style ensuite facilities.
In keeping with Ayurvedic philosophy, food served at the Kalari, is purely vegetarian. Kalari Kovilakom's pure Ayurvedic kitchen is a shrine to ideas first outlined by the ayurvedic physicians of more than a thousand years ago.Foods are prepared in brass, iron or clay vessels only. And chef Nayaranan Kutty weaves his pure vegetarian magic with only the minimum of oil and almost no chillis.A meal in Kalari's pillar-framed, breezy dining area usually begins with tumblers of lukewarm, herb-medicated waters, your serving being based on your body type and our physician's recommendation. This helps to prime the stomach, readying it for the food to follow. The highlight of the meal is next, a gleaming brass thali (or platter). It arrives covered in a banana leaf section, sliced to fit, and offset by rows of glistening katoris, or cups.A raw sprout and onion salad may be balanced with a creamy dish of the local bitter gourd. And a mound of the steaming, fibre-rich red rice could be complemented with a thick lentil and dry jackfruit combo. Whole wheat chapatis or dosas (Indian unleavened breads) could be served up with a piquant; low-spice sambar. The food served to you is based on your therapies, constitution & treatments and varies accordingly. Consumption of Alcohol is prohibited at Kalari Kovilakom.
In addition to a fully equipped Ayurveda center, facilities at the Kalari Kovilakom include Yoga and Meditation classes -regular Yoga classes take place in the large meditation hall, or sometimes in this breezy 'Machan', a loft-like space next to the main palace building. Afternoons in the Yoga Centre are reserved for 'Yoga Nidra', a special meditative technique that brings about deep relaxation in the individual.
There are also regular demonstrations of Kalaripayattu, Kerala's traditional Martial Art.
At Kalari, every therapy is personal. The treatments are customised for you by the doctors, often combined with yoga and other methods to provide deep healing from within and without. Every treatment is based on individual needs and ayurvedic body types. Even the food you're served is individual, with health drinks and herbal preparations that vary with your treatment.10 therapy and massage rooms offer a complete range of treatments. Expert masseuses and therapists work with you from head to toe, bringing new life to tired muscles, bones and tendons.
