This southern Tamil town has been a seat of learning and Tamil culture for centuries. It is also one of Tamil Nadu`s liveliest cities and is very popular with tourists. The focal point of the town and the starting point of your tour is the famed Sri Meenakshi Temple, dedicated to Lord Shiva in his incarnation as lord Sundareshwara. Designed in 1560 by Vishwanatha Nayak, built during the rein of Thirumalai Nayak.One can also see the hall of a 1000 pillars. The next stop on your tour of the temple city is the Thirumalai Nayak palace.This palace is around 1.5 kms from the Meenakshi Temple, this Indo Saracenic palace was built in 1636 by Raja Thirumalai Nayak. The last stop is the Gandhi museum with its blood stained Dhoti of the Mahatma which he was wearing at the time of his assasination.
