Home to the world heritage relics of the shore temples,
Mahabalipuram was the second capital of the Pallava dynasty
. The temples were built during the 6th and 7th Centuries by
Narasimha Varman 1 & II. The difference between the sculptures in Mahabalipuram and other temples through out the state is that while the former show scenes of common people going about their daily activities while the latter show pictures of gods and deities only. Your tour of this fascinating town starts with a visit to Arjuna`s penance, the largest bas-relief in the world. Proceed on to the Krishna Mandapam and the seven other Mandapams . These are shallow rock cut halls full of figure sculptures. The final stop of your tour is the magnificent Shore Temple.. The temple though ravaged by wind and sea still retains its simplicity and freshness. It has two spires one dedicated to Lord Shiva and the other to lord Vishnu. Also visit a few stone carving workshops where this ancient art is still practised.
