Kullu Valley
on the banks of Beas is at an altitude of about 3,900 feet. It
is famous for its apple orchards, its beautiful women, its old wooden temples and
its folk music and dances. It offers ample scope for trekking, climbing,
angling.
The best time to visit Kullu Valley is May-June &
September-October. In October every year, a week-long Dussehra festival is held
in the spacious Kullu-Dhalpur maidan. The status of Raghunathji, the presiding
deity of the valley, is ceremonially brough from a temple in the palace of the
erstwhile rulers of Kullu to the Valley. The highlight of the fair is a dance
competition held every evening.
One of the celebrated valleys of the Himalayas, the Kullu
Valley runs north to sough of the main river and is 80 km long and less than
two kilometers at its broadest. Kullu is a bewitching region, every part with a
charm of its own. In the spring, Kullu is at its colourful best. In early
March, apricot and plum trees, dotted among the fields, burst into pink
blossoms and are crowned with white flowers. The higher slopes are aglow with
gorgeous rhodendrons, while scarlet clusters of the sumash blaze near the
rivers among the terraced fields turning from green to gold. Kullu is charming
in summer, but it is even more fascinating in autumn. By December, there is no
greenery except the Majestic pines and cedars in the forests.
Forty Kilometers away from Kullu, Manali is situated in a
valley. One sees well defined snow capped peaks, the Beas with its clear water
meandering through the valley, on the other side of which are deodar and pine
trees, tiny levelled fileds and fruit orchards. It is an excellent place for a
holiday and favourite starting point for trekkers.
Manali is considered to be the queen of hill resorts as
it holds the prospects of a peaceful stay amidst lush green meadows and
forests, brooks and waterfalls as well as the joy of hikers, climbs, sunbathing
and fishing for the youthful spirits. Manali provides a cool retreat for anyone
who exults in just being amidst unspoilt nature. The town has comfortable
amenities such as tourist bungalows; log huts, cottages and good eating-places.
